Southern Heights

Day 1: Saturday

Arrival and welcome at the airport. Reception at the Cabacci riding centre where we will have a welcome meal in a local restaurant during which we can discuss the programme of activities. Accommodation: At the Cabacci riding centre

Day 2: Sunday: GUADIX – LUGROS
Today we will ride towards to oriental side of the Natural Park,  descending over “the end of the world” and down into the valley of the Alhama valley. From here, we will ride back up among the pine forests until we reach the Patio de Lugros hotel ***. Here we will stop for our evening meal and overnight accommodation. A picnic lunch will be provided.

Day 3: Monday: LUGROS – PICO DEL CAMARATE – JEREZ DEL MARQUESADO
Today we will climb towards to occidental side of the Sierra Nevada. We will ride through a variety of terrain, from semi-arid planes to luxurious valleys, and will finally arrive at the Cogollos lake which collects all the melted ice water from the Sierra Nevada. Here we will stop for our picnic lunch before heading on along the ancient paths of the Santa Constanza copper mine. We will finally arrive at the small Moorish village of Jerez del Marquesado.
Evening meal and accommodation: Hotel Picón de Jerez *** (the hotel has stunning views of the Sierra Nevada)

Day 4: Tuesday: JEREZ DEL MARQUESADO – POSTERO ALTO
After breakfast, we will start our unforgettable ascent of the “Picon” mountain. We will eventually reach altitudes of over 2000 meters. The grassy slopes of the mountain are home to some of the famous Spanish bulls that are left here to graze in the temperate climate. A picnic lunch will be provided.
Evening meal and accommodation: Refugio de Alta Montaña Postero Alto (1.800m)

Day 5: Wednesday: PUERTO DE JEREZ – TREVELEZ
We will leave our mountain accommodation in the direction of Peñón del Puerto. This route will offer spectacular panoramic views over the Marquesado and its small villages. After a picnic lunch, we will ride on towards el Horcajo, from where we will descend to la Isla and join the Trevelez river. We will then follow the river, crossing the mouth of the Rio Culo de Perro river in the process, until we arrive at the village of Trevelez. Trevelez is a mountain village famous for its hams, and, at over 1700 meters, is the highest village in Spain.

Day 6 : Thursday: TREVÉLEZ - TREVELEZ
We will climb up the iron paths, twisting our way towards the snowy heights of the Sierra Nevada, crossing streams that carry the melted glacial waters down to the valleys below. We will stop for lunch Siete Lagunas (3200m), below Mulhacen, the highest summit of the Iberia peninsula. After a short ride down, we will return towards Trevelez, riding through a wide variety of terrains.

Five and a half hours in the saddle

Day 7: Friday: TREVELEZ - BUBIÓN
We will start this day by riding further down the iron paths, finally meeting the earthy path below which will lead us to our final destination, el Barranco del Poqueira. We will arrive in Bubión where we will eat. The day will be punctuated by long canters through the mountain.
Three and a half hours in the saddle
Afternoon free to visit the local village
Evening meal in a local restaurant and accommodation in Villa Turística de Bubión*** hotel

Day 8 Saturday
Departure after breakfast
